No reason not to give it a go, but it won't pass rainwater through in the same way that weed membrane will. This could lead to an excess of water around the edges, or even affect any trees that have roots extending to the covered area. You could possibly poke holes in it, or cut slits in it...

DIY for the win! Stainless is fairly easy to come by. The telescopic 'chimney' that comes as part of a kitchen extractor unit comes to mind. I have a couple of these left over from previous kitchen refurbs. So that's the materials taken care of, and straps can be cut out of these too.

Again, £30. I could get an air fryer for that, or two mobile phones. (The £7.95 advertised is just for the strap)
