Removal of chimney breast, do I need to fill the inset hole? (1)

Have you got neighbours on the other side? Depending on the construction, you may have only a single skin of brickwork between you and them. Not good for when someone has the telly turned up. If you can get hold of some free bricks/blocks (go skip diving, or get seconds/damaged bricks from a...

New shed on seriously poor concrete base

If it will be a timber floor then airflow underneath will be a huge benefit. You might as well raise it up on timber sleepers, concrete blocks or stacked paving slabs. Stiff mortar bed underneath, strategically placed, to get it level. The existing base should take the weight if there is...

New shed on seriously poor concrete base

Doesn't look too bad for a shed. How thick is the concrete? Will your new shed have its own floor or is this going to be the floor?

    Drilling through rendered wall

Does it need to be 25mm? I would have thought 10mm to be plenty. Anyway, you could start off with a much smaller bit and work your way up, much easier to slightly increase an existing hole, than try to do a big hole in one go. You could also start the hole bigger than you need on the...

Wratherproofing new workshop wall on existing larger base

Replace the wall with 140mm concrete blocks, flush to the inside of the wall. Flash the front edge over the block, and lap behind your membrane. Secure the timber frame to the floor, internally, using a heavy duty long right angle restraint strap, screwed along its length into the timber and...

    Weed barrier vs breathable mebrane

I found a scrappy old bit in the weeds at the end of my garden, certainly been there a few years. No noticeable signs of deterioration.

    Weed barrier vs breathable mebrane

No reason not to give it a go, but it won't pass rainwater through in the same way that weed membrane will. This could lead to an excess of water around the edges, or even affect any trees that have roots extending to the covered area. You could possibly poke holes in it, or cut slits in it...

    DIY chimney cap

DIY for the win! Stainless is fairly easy to come by. The telescopic 'chimney' that comes as part of a kitchen extractor unit comes to mind. I have a couple of these left over from previous kitchen refurbs. So that's the materials taken care of, and straps can be cut out of these too.

    DIY chimney cap

Again, £30. I could get an air fryer for that, or two mobile phones. (The £7.95 advertised is just for the strap)

    DIY chimney cap

3 pots. I was thinking something like zinc sheet and a long worm drive strap.

Help with a stopcock which wont budge please

Large ring spanner over the handle, gives plenty of leverage. But as mentioned, turn it off outside first!

    DIY chimney cap

Wanting to cap my unused chimneys. I need 3, coming in about £30 each that seems like a massive mark-up for what is basically a glorified biscuit tin lid! Has anyone come up with a DIY alternative? Terracotta plant trays? (or indeed a painted biscuit tin lid?)

What is this random pipe? 1930s bedroom

Diameter? Metal or plastic? A multi tool (the oscillating type, not a Leatherman) will be able to cut the pipe flush.
